Degree Lifelong learning diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In order to obtain these qualifications, the students must be holders of a state-regulated university qualification or a university-specific qualification. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.
Virtual Campus The students on this lifelong learning course will have access to the Ágora virtual campus, an effective work and communication platform for students, lecturers and course directors and coordinators. Ágora allows students to find background material for their classes, to work in teams, ask their lecturers questions, consult their marks, etc.

The registration fee must be paid before the beginning of this lifelong learning course.

This lifelong learning course can be attended as part of the master's degree Geographical Information Systems or as part of the postgraduate course Environmental applications for GIS, or independently.


GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools are an organised integration of hardware, software and geographical data that are designed to capture, store, analyse and display geographically referenced information. In the society we live in this information is of key importance because it is a strategic asset that provides knowledge and added value to present-day organisations. The emergence of new information and communication technologies has boosted the development of these new applications and new ways of understanding and managing our environment.

GIS works as a geographical content database that is associated with graphic objects on a digital map using a common identifier. This system allows users to separate information into different topic layers and store them independently. In this way it gives users the ability to relate existing information through the topology of the objects and generate new ones. GIS technology can be used for scientific research, resource management, asset management, archaeology, environmental impact assessment or urban planning, and these are only a few of many examples.

As well as showing us the possibilities that these tools can provide, this course offers students technological and operational knowledge of current systems, practical skills to be able to use these up to date IT tools and provides them with the ability to perform territorial spatial analysis. In turn, this allows for improved management of cities and the environment. Currently, there is a high demand for qualified professionals who know how to use GIS and have experience using the latest IT tools and devices.

  • To carry out environmental impact studies, vulnerability maps and other environmental analyses using GIS tools.
  • To draw up local action plans and agenda 21 plans.

Subjects
1- GIS: Environmental Information and Data 2 ECTS
  • Basic concepts about environmental areas and vectors and the associated cartography.
  • Adequate understanding of the technical development of the Departamento de Medio Ambiente de Catalunya (The Catalonian Department of the Environment) in terms of natural space management.
  • Broad understanding of experiences and case studies of environmental GIS implementation.
  • Creation, organisation and management of information about natural spaces using GIS tools.

2- GIS and Environmental Resources 5 ECTS
  • Adequate understanding of natural and environmental resource analysis and management of information resources.
  • Perform collection, integration and processing of environmental information using IT resources available on an open network.
  • Make environmental impact studies, vulnerability maps and other environmental analyses using GIS tools.
  • Technical ability to create, organise and generate new environmental information using GIS tools.
  • Research into local plans of action and Agenda 21 plans for tracking urban transformation.
